Program Details

Our curriculum is designed to challenge and engage students at every level. We set high academic standards and provide the support needed to help each student reach their full potential.

Mathematics

The Great Oaks Secondary Program is a comprehensive and inclusive program that prioritizes crucial aspects of mathematical learning such as critical thinking, real-life application, and mathematical thinking. The program is designed to cater to the diverse needs of students by immersing them in multiple aspects of the learning experience. The research-based curriculum uses best practices and strategies to provide students with a relevant, engaging, and rigorous learning experience. The program is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and Mathematical Practices and offers a range of courses, including Foundations of Algebra, Geometry, Algebra I, and Algebra II. These core courses prepare students for more advanced courses such as Statistics, PreCalculus, and Trigonometry.

Science

The Great Oaks Charter School's science program is designed to provide students with an engaging and interactive learning experience by integrating the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as a fundamental aspect of its curriculum. The curriculum aims to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity among students. It is structured around coherent storylines that enable them to investigate and pose questions related to an anchoring phenomenon or design challenge. Through science and engineering practices, students are able to make sense of and explain the phenomena, as well as understand disciplinary core ideas (DCI) and crosscutting concepts. The program's ultimate goal is to inspire a lifelong passion for science among students and equip them with the tools required for future success. The science courses offered include Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science, Anatomy & Physiology, Environmental Science, and Marine Science.

Social Studies

The Social Studies Department at Great Oaks Bridgeport is for students to learn and apply essential concepts, content, and skills of the four major disciplines in social studies—civics, economics, geography, and history. Elements of these four disciplines are found in all social studies courses so that students will better understand themselves, their country, their own culture, other individuals, and other cultures of the world. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare students for the challenges of college and careers, as well as a thorough preparation for civic life.

English

The English Department at Great Oaks Bridgeport strives to present all students with a challenging, engaging curriculum. Required courses offer an integrated reading and writing approach, including speaking, viewing, and listening skills and critical thinking, research, and multimedia strategies. The English Department aims to offer a broad range of courses. This will allow flexibility for students to choose a course proportional to their ability, interest, and background. At the same time, the program is structured enough, so there should be no confusion about which English course is appropriate.
